Veterans Caregiver Program: What Every Family Should Know

We've written extensively about the PCAFC stipend itself. This is about the parts of the program that aren't about money — what enrollment actually involves day to day.

    Training Before You're Approved

Caregivers accepted into the Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers generally complete required training covering the specific caregiving skills relevant to the veteran's condition, before the stipend begins. This isn't optional paperwork — it's meant to actually prepare you for the caregiving role.

Ongoing Monitoring, Not a One-Time Approval

Enrollment isn't a single approval that's then permanent and hands-off. VA maintains ongoing contact through your assigned Caregiver Support Coordinator, and periodic check-ins are part of the program's design — a real relationship, not just a monthly deposit.

What's Expected of You as a Caregiver

The program expects you to provide a meaningful level of personal care and support consistent with what was assessed during your application. If your capacity to provide that care changes significantly — your own health, a move, a change in circumstances — it's important to communicate that to your Caregiver Support Coordinator rather than letting the gap go unaddressed.

    Support Resources Beyond the Stipend

Enrolled caregivers typically get access to a support network, mental health counseling, and (depending on eligibility) CHAMPVA health coverage and respite care — not just the monthly payment. These are real, usable benefits worth taking advantage of, not just fine print.

    What Happens If Circumstances Change

If the veteran's care needs change, or if the caregiving arrangement itself changes — a different family member taking over, for instance — that needs to go through your Caregiver Support Coordinator rather than assuming the program continues automatically under new circumstances.

How This Connects to Home Care

Being enrolled as a family caregiver doesn't mean you have to handle everything alone. Professional non-medical home care can fill gaps your own caregiving hours don't cover, without affecting your program enrollment.

    Our 7th Week Guarantee

No long contracts. If you don't feel the difference after six weeks of care at 20 or more hours a week, your seventh week is free.
