Your local Area Agency on Aging is generally the best starting point for non-VA respite program options — they maintain current information on local funding, eligibility, and how to apply, which changes enough by state and county that a general answer isn't as useful as a direct local inquiry.
What to Ask When You Find a Program
Confirm the actual eligibility criteria (income limits, condition-specific requirements), how much respite it actually covers (hours per month, dollar caps), and whether there's a waitlist — some subsidized programs have real waiting periods worth planning around.
Formal Programs vs. Private Pay
A formal respite program can meaningfully reduce cost, but availability and hours are often more limited than private pay. Many families combine both — using a subsidized program for baseline coverage and privately arranged respite to fill additional gaps.
