Veteran Caregiver Stipend: What It Is and Why It Matters

What the Stipend Actually Is
The VA pays a tax-free monthly stipend directly to one designated Primary Family Caregiver of an eligible veteran through the Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers (PCAFC). It's not a reimbursement or a loan — it's compensation for the caregiving work a family member is already doing, recognized formally by the VA.
Why This Matters Beyond the Money
Family caregiving is real, unpaid labor that often forces someone to reduce work hours or leave a job entirely. This stipend doesn't just help financially — it's formal recognition that caregiving is legitimate work, which matters to a lot of family caregivers who've never had that acknowledged before.
The Basics of Who Qualifies
Generally: the veteran needs a service-connected disability rating of 70% or higher, with a documented need for personal care expected to last at least six months. As of 2026, eligibility has expanded to veterans of all service eras, not just post-9/11.
What Else Comes With It
Beyond the monthly stipend, the Primary Family Caregiver typically gets access to CHAMPVA health insurance if not already covered, up to 30 days of respite care a year, and mental health counseling.
