VA Housebound vs. Aid & Attendance: You Can Only Get One

We've already written about Aid & Attendance in detail. This is the benefit most families confuse it with — Housebound — and the confusion matters, because you can't receive both at once. Understanding the real difference helps you apply for the one that actually fits.
What Housebound Actually Is
Like Aid & Attendance, Housebound isn't a standalone program — it's an increased pension amount added to a veteran's or surviving spouse's basic VA pension. The difference is what triggers it. Aid & Attendance is about needing hands-on help with daily activities — bathing, dressing, eating. Housebound is about being permanently and substantially confined to your home by a permanent disability, regardless of whether you need hands-on personal care.
The Rates Are Different, and A&A Pays More
For 2026, Housebound pays a single veteran up to roughly $1,776 a month, compared to Aid & Attendance's roughly $2,424. If a veteran qualifies for both, VA pays the higher rate — Aid & Attendance — not both combined. That's a common misunderstanding worth clearing up before anyone assumes the two stack.
Why This Still Matters If A&A Pays More
If someone clearly needs hands-on help with daily activities, Aid & Attendance is generally the one to pursue, and Housebound becomes moot. But some veterans are confined to home by a permanent disability without needing that level of hands-on assistance — think significant mobility limitations rather than needing help with bathing or dressing. For that situation, Housebound is the benefit that actually applies, even though it pays less.
How It's Evaluated
The same VA form — 21-2680, Examination for Housebound Status or Permanent Need for Regular Aid and Attendance — covers both determinations. A physician completes it, and VA uses the documented findings to determine which enhanced pension rate, if either, applies. There's no separate application process to remember.
How This Connects to Home Care
Whichever benefit applies, both are meant to help offset the cost of the kind of support we provide. We're a non-medical home care agency, and either enhanced pension can help a family afford Care Professional hours at home — the underlying need for support doesn't change based on which VA category it falls under.
Our 7th Week Guarantee
No long contracts. If you don't feel the difference after six weeks of care at 20 or more hours a week, your seventh week is free.
