Hospice in Salt Lake City: What Helps and What to Avoid

We've written a general overview of hospice, home health, and home care elsewhere. This is specifically about the common missteps families make once hospice actually starts, and what tends to help instead.
What Helps: Starting Hospice Earlier, Not Later
One of the most common regrets families express is starting hospice later than they could have. Hospice is available once a physician estimates a prognosis of six months or less — it doesn't mean giving up, and starting earlier often means more time to actually benefit from the comfort-focused care and family support hospice provides, rather than accessing it only in the final days.
What to Avoid: Assuming Hospice Means 24/7 Coverage
Hospice provides scheduled visits from nurses, aides, and other team members — not continuous, around-the-clock presence in the home. A lot of families are caught off guard by this, expecting hospice staff to be there constantly. The hours between visits are real, and that's where non-medical home care usually fills the gap.
What Helps: Communicating Clearly With the Hospice Team
Hospice teams generally welcome direct, honest communication about symptoms, concerns, and what the family is and isn't able to manage. Families who ask questions and stay in close contact with their hospice nurse tend to have a smoother experience than those who wait until something feels like a crisis.
What to Avoid: Not Asking About Additional Support Early
Some families don't realize non-medical home care can run alongside hospice until they're already overwhelmed. Asking about additional support early — even before it feels necessary — tends to work better than waiting until a caregiver is exhausted.
What Helps: Understanding What Hospice Actually Covers
Hospice covers medical equipment, medications related to the terminal diagnosis, and the clinical team's visits — but not continuous companionship or hands-on daily care outside of scheduled visits. Knowing this upfront helps set realistic expectations from day one.
