What Hospice Includes

• Medical management of symptoms — pain control, comfort-focused treatment for the terminal diagnosis, medication related to that condition.
• Scheduled visits from a nurse, and often a hospice aide, at a frequency determined by the care plan — not continuous, around-the-clock presence.
• Medical equipment related to the diagnosis — a hospital bed, oxygen, mobility aids, as needed.
• A social worker and chaplain or spiritual care, if wanted, supporting the emotional and practical needs of the whole family, not just the patient.
• Bereavement support for the family, typically continuing for a period after the death.
• On-call support, generally by phone, for symptom concerns between scheduled visits.

What Hospice Doesn't Include

• Continuous, hands-on daily care — hospice visits are scheduled, not constant. The hours between visits are real.
• Non-medical daily support — help with bathing, dressing, meals, and companionship isn't part of the hospice team's scope.
• Curative treatment for the terminal condition — hospice is comfort-focused, which is a deliberate shift in the goal of care, not an oversight in what's covered.

Where the Gap Actually Shows Up
